If you’re flirting with the idea of ratcheting up your business’ website but are feeling a bit confused about the varied components involved with a website, then this article is addressed to you. When speaking with web developers/ designers/ producers, it will help to understand the various components that go into an online presence. You have to realise that they’re all somewhat separate spheres, and that your web designer, IT solutions manager or in-house web guru may not have complete control over all these aspects. Additionally, the people you’re dealing with to produce your new site may refer to these separate components without taking into account that you view them all as one package. I’m here to help you get with the program.

Domain Name Registration

Ok let’s start with the basics. A website requires a domain name, otherwise known as a URL (universal resources locator), or a web address. These are are purchased from outlets such as crazy domains and godadddy. Purchasing a URL gives you access to that particular address name. However a URL alone won’t allow you to set up a website. For that you’ll also require hosting. Your hosting solution will allow the series of files that make up your website to be viewed through your web address.

Hosting

Hosting refers to the servers where your website’s files live. A website essentially is a series of files – text docuemtns with barely readable computer code and images – that sit on a computer (the server), that get transformed by your internet browser into the website you see before your eyes. Hosting solutions differ greatly in price, size and service, and really depend on the parotuclar needs of your site. Hosting is something usually organised (or at least recommended) by a web developer, however if you already have a website then you’ll have an existing server and your new website may just utilise that solution.

Web Designer / Web Developer

These two terms are used somewhat interchangeably by many people. In fact amongst professionals there’s not a completely clear idea whether these terms describe different roles. But if there is a difference it’s this – a web designer determines how the site will look visually, and how it will work. Really this role spans the terrain from graphic design to project and account management. These roles are often done by completely separate people, so again that’s why the term is quite imprecise. The developer is responsible for all the coding that’s required to make the page look and function according to the brief received from the client. She’s your coding nerd.

Content

Content primarily refers to the text and images – the ‘articles’ if you will – in the site. Websites are often built before much of the actual content is ready, with the understanding that the client will supply content after core functionality is complete. Often the site’s content is the responsibility of the business or owner and will be created either in-house or by a copywriter. Content is typically added by either sending it to the developers, or via a Content Management System (CMS).

Review Time

A website is made up of various components, each of which tends to be the responsibility of different parties. It’s the job of a competent online producer to oversee the various tasks and to pull the project together. As a business owner, make sure you’ve got your head around the varying components of your website and stay on top of who is responsible for what.

I recently read a blog post on Quick Sprout, by Neil Patel titled 8 Ways to Improve Your Web-Based Business .. the post made many good points, but their was one inparticular that really struck a cord with me and that was …

Perfection Doesn’t Exist

Now the reason this caught my attention was because I have seen so many of my previous and existing clients worring way too much about the design aspect of the site, when they could have moved on to the more important money making tasks a long time ago! I say this, in hope of knocking some sense into people (plus I felt like having a bit of a rant).

Now this may seem strange coming from a company that does web design, but your website does not have to start perfect! Infact your site will never be perfect! Too many people try to get perfect before even starting to sell / market the business!

As Neil points out in his post, many hugely successful websites have had very simplistic looks. In fact often a minimalistic design can improve a websites conversion rates.

I myself was guilty of this when I started eVenture. I spent months and months worrying about every minor little detail of the site and would tell myself “I just have to get the site perfect, than it will be easy to sell” … well I was completely wrong! Those additional months I spent really made no difference to the end users, in fact I could have knocked up a site in a few hours and they would not have cared less!

If there is one thing to remember from this rant, it is this …

Visitors do not care about your site as much as you do

A website is something that should be continually improved over time anyway. You should never be thinking your website is complete, because it can always be improved. So please learn from my mistakes and start worrying about the more important aspects of business …

Like sales and profit!

Rant Over
